Without a doubt, the worst place for any unit specialized in archery to be is in the middle of fierce hand-to-hand combat. The fact that the crossbowmen of the Thorns Guard are intensively trained in sword combat and equipped with light weapons and armor, certainly allows them to withstand direct assaults that would disband ordinary archers. Wherever possible, sensible commanders will avoid falling into such situations, but can rest assured that their Thornsguard units will not wither from a surprise attack. In any case, its true strength lies in its crossbows, which can pierce even the heaviest of armor. Placed in the right place, these troops are capable of even holding back the advance of an enemy army's vanguard and can protect allied close combat troops from archers or even enemy cavalry.
